This music and dance spectacular brings together local musicians and dance artists from a variety of genres to share their vast talents for a thoroughly entertaining evening. Forward Motion Dance Company is proud to be a resident dance company for THCPA and of our legacy of bringing quality dance performances to this historic venue. This presentation supports the THCPA Capital Campaign that is more than a renovation\, it is a reimagining and expansion of the space that has doubled in size to create a dynamic place to meet the needs of our area’s ever-growing audience and artists. Thalian Hall is a cornerstone of our city’s identity and the Capital Campaign will ensure that future generations continue to experience the magic of live performance in a space that reflects the energy\, diversity\, and creativity of our community. To showcase some of the marvels of Thalian Hall\, come enjoy a special presentation of the unique and historic Thunder Roll and Rain Machine special effects\, built right into the Thalian Hall stage\, that were innovative and thrilling in their time. \n \nMusical entertainment is from local favorite Benny Hill\, who brings a quartet to the stage\, well-versed in many styles and genres while specializing in jazz steeped in the tradition of many past greats yet presenting a distinct style of his own. Benny is a true crowd pleaser and never fails to produce excitement and enthusiasm on stage. \nArts Sensation! also brings a variety of dance creations from many genres. Tap performances are from the Hi Steppers\, who will perform to “Big Time”\, and the Company “T” Tap Dancers who will dance a new piece to music by Sarah Vaughan and choregraphed by Tracey Varga. Three jazz-modern pieces choreographed by Tammy Daniels\, Linda Ann Webb and Tracey Varga will be part of the exciting evening\, as well as a classical ballet piece danced by Madeleine Ramsey\, a jazz-theatre solo presented by Laurie Wood to “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra\, and a high-energy cultural Latin dance performed by eight dancers from Itzayan Danza Folklorico. Third-grade students from the Snipes Academy of Arts and Design will move to music composed by local musician Julia Walker Jewell\, led by dancer and instructor Jeneen Cleare Floyd. Alexandra Hartline and Shane Elliott will share their ballroom dancing talents in a piece choreographed by dancer and instructor Erin Pick. Expect an inspired and exciting evening of music and dance that is sure to bring you lasting memories of the amazing talent in our community. \nThe 22nd Arts Sensation! is presented by Forward Motion Dance Company. Dancers and musical artists bring the art form of modern\, contemporary\, classical and jazz dance to the stage at the beautiful and historic Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts for a varied and collaborative event that showcases the talents of Choreographer Tracey Varga. Presented are new dance performances along with re-creations of works from the past\, a piece danced to live music performed by guitarist Edward Stephenson and violinist Bella Garcia\, film by Patrick Ogelvie\, and a jazz piece from guest choreographer Alison Dutka Jones. \nForward Motion Dance Company is thrilled to feature onstage Entrance to the Enchanted Castle (1993) from the extraordinary American painter and sculptor Dorothy Gillespie (1920-2012). From the Thalian Hall archives\, this majestic sculpture will be displayed for the first time with the return of the dance piece “Mystical Journey”\, choreographed for seven dancers to music by Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider. \nThe program also brings new modern/contemporary works by choreographer Tracey Varga and includes a piece set to classical guitar and violin by composers Isaac Albéniz\, Francisco Tárrega and Luigi Boccherini in three sections with eight dancers\, a duet danced by FMD dancers Nicole Dalier and Savannah Brooks with music by Peter Gabriel\, as well as new dance with teen dancers from local studios set to the KREAM remix of Kate Bush’s “Running up that Hill” and a striking film from Patrick Ogelvie. Presented also is “Come Join”\, a piece that premiered at the 2025 Wilmington Dance Festival\, with music by David Byrne. “Night Out at Birdland” highlights the music of jazz greats Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan and Amy Winehouse and features eight dancers. From our guest choreographer\, Alison Dutka Jones\, “Terminal to Tulsa” is a delightful jazz dance set on four company dancers with music from Herbie Hancock. DESCRIPTION:The 21st Annual Arts Sensation is presented by Forward Motion Dance Company on the Thalian Hall Main Stage to showcase lively and entertaining local talent for a music and dance spectacular! Now presenting its 21st performance\, Arts Sensation began in 2001\, created by Tracey Varga and produced each year by Forward Motion Dance Company with the intent to bring local musicians and dance artists together to share their vast talents in a variety of genres\, all on the beautiful Main Stage of the historic Thalian Hall. \n\nMusical entertainment is from Selah Dubb\, a powerhouse reggae band hailing from Wrightsville Beach\, NC. Founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Evangelist\, the band has been captivating audiences for over three decades with their infectious beats\, powerful live performances and mix of original reggae anthems and dance hall grooves\, spanning over 12 albums and numerous smash hits. The current lineup of Selah Dubb includes Mizz Beatz on keyboards and vocals\, and Justin “Heter” Pan on drums and percussion. The trio brings their unique blend of reggae\, rock\, and soul to every show\, inspiring audiences far and wide. \n\nArts Sensation also brings a variety of dance creations from several genres. Teen students from the Theatre Dance Workshop perform the “Stick Dance” that was created and choreographed by Tom Hansen for the 1974 production of Peter Pan. A re-creation of a dance is brought by choreographer and dance instructor Judy Greenhut. Choreographer and dancer Linda Larson restages a work with fourteen vibrant dancers that was featured in Bob Fosse’s 1978 Broadway show Dancin’ with a musical score by Brad Anderson and Eugene Fleming. Adding a special flare is ballroom dance instructor Erin Pick who presents the “Name of the Rose Waltz” with ten dancers. \n\nModern-contemporary dance pieces are choreographed by instructors including Melanie Dubel\, Lily Hemingway\, and Zoe Hemingway and danced by students of the Glory Academy of Fine Arts. Energetic dance solos ignite in a funk piece choreographed and performed by Lily Hemingway as well as a modern-classical solo created and danced by Mya Tominack. Tracey Varga presents a modern-jazz dance set to music by Goldfrapp\, and with their fine style\, the captivating Company “T” Tap Dancers\, also choregraphed by Tracey Varga\, return to wow audiences with their vintage flair. \n\nA special presentation of the unique and historic Thunder Roll and Rain Machine showcases these special effects\, built right into the Thalian Hall stage\, that were innovative and thrilling in their time. \nThe 21st Arts Sensation is supported by a grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment andthe Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County.
